The Director of Sports Medicine, Football works in collaboration with and under the direction of the Assistant AD/Head Football Athletic Trainer in the care, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and related problems in cadet-athletes. In the absence of the Assistant AD/Head Football Athletic Trainer, will assume primary responsibility and oversight of other staff in the sport of football.

Scope of Impact

Assume responsibility for coordinating and delivering athletic training services to the football team. Conducts thorough and accurate record keeping. Undertakes administrative tasks and special projects at the discretion of the Assistant AD/Head Football Athletic Trainer. Oversees athletic training interns assigned to the sport of football. Perform duties consistent with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Board of Certification, and New York State Board of Education standards. 

Level of Decision Making

Employee will adhere to NCAA, Patriot League, USMA, and Army West Point Athletic Department rules and regulations. They will follow team physician standing orders in the execution of duties. Employee will have discretional decision-making in the day-to-day management of cadet athletes and their healthcare. They will retain   the ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play decisions in conjunction with team physicians.    In the absence of the Assistant AD/Head Football Athletic Trainer, will assume primary responsibility and oversight of other staff in the sport of football.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

80% Daily football operations

• Coordinate and deliver athletic training services on a daily basis to the football team. 
• Care and management of injuries and illnesses, including prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation. 
• Maintain proper records of injuries, treatment, rehabilitation, and exposure. 
• Communicate effectively with the head football athletic trainer, coaches, parents, military personnel, and physicians regarding cadet health and safety.
• Design and supervision of rehabilitation programs. 
• Referral of cadet-athletes to an appropriate physician according to accepted guidelines
• Provide direction, guidance and mentorship to junior member of the football athletic training room staff
• Supervise athletic training students and cadet managers/trainers assigned to football

10% As needed instructions

• Provide education and instruction to cadet-athletes on the prevention and care of musculoskeletal injuries.

10% On-going review and recommendations

• Implement risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with the performance team

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

In coordination with the head football athletic trainer, provides direction, guidance, and mentorship to junior members of the football athletic training room staff. Will provide feedback to the head football athletic trainer regarding the football athletic training room staff's performance. Will supervise athletic training students and cadet managers/trainers assigned to football. 

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

Perform duties in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.

• Must be able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the athletic schedule, including receiving phone calls after hours.
• Ability to lift >75lbs 
• The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. 
• Constantly operates a computer, and productive machinery such as a calculator, copy machine, and medical modalities.
• The person in this position frequently communicates with team members, United States Military Academy (“USMA”) staff, and vendors. 
• Consistently works in outdoor weather conditions when providing direct support at outdoor practice and competition facilities.
• Mobility and strength to perform lifesaving and/or stabilizing techniques as required.

 

Travel 

Travel as necessary with the football team to away contests and to complete necessary licensure continuing education.  Up to 20% of the time may be committed to travel.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or related field
• Minimum of five (5) years of Division I Football Athletic Training Experience
• Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)
• Board of Certification (BOC)
• Eligible for New York State Athletic Trainers’ Certification/License
• Ability to meet continuing education requirements as established by the BOC and the State of New York
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Demonstrated successful supervisory skills
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, cadet-athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel  
• Ability to collaborate with coaches and sports performance staff to build high-performance teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree
• 5 years of Division I football experience, preferably Football Bowl Subdivision
• Manual therapy skills

Additional Eligibility Requirements

• Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
• Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including being willing to submit to a background screen.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Pay Range

$80,000 - $85,000

This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position. AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
